Question:

Ideas for my club?

I'm starting a new environmental club and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for projects. I was thinking of planting some trees, a school and park/beach clean up, and putting recycling bins around the school but other than that I'm short of ideas.

  1. Organizing a park/beach cleanup is a good enough idea to justify your club.  Run with that and you will accomplish more good for the environment than all the global warming activists put together.

    Good luck with your effort!!

  2. What a novel idea. I'll bet your county Extension Office can order you some saplings to plant in the spring. Many Extension Offices sell trees, brushes and other plants at a very cheap price. Maybe you could also hold a photography contest. Our local state park here does this several times a year. They charge a small entrance fee and give out some prizes as well. Be sure to get a release form signed by all of the photographers so that you can use their photos for promotion flyers for your club. The rest of the money goes into a fund for clean up and restoration projects. A local aluminium recycling center may be able to provide you with large PVC or Plastic "pickel barrels" which are frequently used for aluminium can reycyling. I believe that aluminium is going for about .55 cents a pound...so that could be a good source of revenue. Good Luck

  3. check out what is good for the environment in your community

talk about global warming and the animals

    sincerely, melissa

  4. Pass out flyer's from recycled paper of course, on simple everyday tips of things people can do to help make a change...Like turning water off while brushing teeth or unplugging things around the home that are not in use. Good Luck and Thank God for people like you!

  5. Why not kill two birds with: My Best Recycling Idea

Besides recycling the plastic containers, you can improve your work or home environments by bringing live potted plants indoors.

    Major items needed:

One empty plastic gallon container.   Tree Top Apple Juice is preferred, or equal in shape.

One empty plastic ½ gallon container.  Langers All Pomergranate Juice is preferred or equal.

Directions:  Lay the plastic gallon container on its side so the front label is facing up.  Place the empty plastic half gallon container on the label and with a sharpie pen outline the bottom on the Tree Top label and with a sharp knife carefully cut the outline.  Insert the half gallon into the hole until it rest on the back label of the gallon container.  Then mark and cut approximately one inch above the cut on the ½ gallon  to complete your planter container.  Remove and drill several ¼ inch holes on the bottom of the ½ gallon cut container for drainage.

Fill the cut ½ gallon planter with one inch of gravel before putting in good potting mix soil and live growing plant.  If you make two or more you can pour the water back and forth and not waste the water with the nutrients.

Go to NASA’s Clean Air Plant Study for the top ten plants that cleans the indoor air better than the rest.   http://www.zone10.com/tech/NASA/Fyh.htm

  6. Build a retort to convert "green waste" to charcoal (if you can use the off-gas to run an engine, so much the better).  Use the charcoal as a soil improver which also sequesters carbon for thousands of years.

Bonus points for being able to provide two useful byproducts of the retorting process, e.g. electricity and hot water.  That would let you get the auto shop and metal shop students involved.
