a graduation cap is pretty easy it does not have to be black. you could use a round chocolate sponge cake for base .

draw a picture for her and transfer it onto roll out icing using the old pin prick method. my friend drew a piture of einstein and used e=mc2 to mean elaine's birthday = mmm cake shared. i then copied the picture onto the icing using a pin. workes well and is something unique

Umm how about a little scene of a playground with the kids.. or you could take a photo of them all and get it printed onto the cake at a cake shop :)
