Question:

Ideas for some unique Halloween treats?

My 9 year old cousin asked if she could spend Halloween with me this year. I, of course, said yes. I want to go all out for her. I'm going to make some cupcakes with dark chocolate icing with orange icing letters on them and find some funky candy decorations so she can decorate hers herself. Any other ideas? She prefers to just eat the treats rather than make them mostly, so the recipes/ideas don't have to be kid friendly :-) Also, she's going to be a hippie this year (I'm going to take her to some thrift shops to come up with her costume...we're looking to Janis Joplin for inspiration), so if you can think of anything that might tie into that, that would be great...I can't really think of anything for that though.

lol, and I know Halloween is a ways off, but I'm asking now anyway. Thanks!

  1. Easy!.. Caramel apples! I take these into my kids classroom every fall/halloween and they love them!

All you need is 2 apples, green is best.(one for you and one for girl)

1 bag of caramels(kraft makes good kind)

    and water

INSERT wooden pop sticks (from bag of caramels) into stem end of each apple. Cover large plate with waxed paper; grease paper with butter. Set aside.

PLACE caramels in large saucepan. Add water; cook on medium-low heat until caramels are completely melted, stirring constantly.

DIP apples into melted caramel until evenly coated, spooning caramel over apples if necessary. Allow excess caramel to drip off. Scrape bottoms of apples, then place on prepared plate. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or until ready to serve. Remove from refrigerator and let stand at room temperature 15 min. before serving. Store leftovers in refrigerator.

If you want buy a bag or peanuts and or/oreo cookie crumbles(can be found in ice cream section) to roll apples in..even if she doesnt like making things im sure shed love doing this!

8 (1/4 inch thick) apple slices, seeds removed for garnish

Preparation Bring cider, cinnamon sticks and pumpkin spice to a simmer in a medium saucepan.

Remove from heat and let stand, covered, 5 minutes.

Pour hot cider into mugs and top with apple slices and cinnamon sticks

  2. Maybe some chocolate bars.  Its easy.  Kids just love sweet like Hershey Bars or maybe fruit snacks, hard candy.  Now for there fancy part bake some brownies with a Jack ol' lantern on it.  Well its a frosting picture.  I am going to find some more.  I'll email it to you.

  3. You can make spiderwebs on the chocolate frosting, by making thin concentric circles around the top (use the squirt can frosting with the tips, or gel).  Then with a toothpick, gently pull through the frosting, and all the lines in about 5 places (from center of cupcake to edges); put a gummy spider on top ....  I used to make baked apples for my daughters and put a gummy worm out of the top as soon as it came out of the oven.  It would slither down the sides:)   And cut American cheese slices with a big pumpkin cookie cutter and melt that on bread for them.... homemade popcorn balls (good with gumdrops in them);  caramel apples or apples with caramel dip.. ...  For Janis, she should part her hair down the middle and wear it long & straight, with a ribbon tied around her forehead;  lots of beads; bell-bottoms and platform shoes (or chunky sandals); a vest over a long-sleeved flowy shirt (the guys were the ones who wore the tie-dyed t-shirts mostly); a necklace with a peace sign.  Have fun! ......

  4. I often go to Google.com and put in things like "Halloween party". You can get lots of cool ideas that way. Http://www.familyfun.com also has some nice stuff there, including decorations and recipes.

We have a potluck dinner at our house. I've made little meatloafs or hamburgers shaped like bats. We make deviled eggs with olive eyes, and red punch with round ice cubes (for eyeballs).

  5. For my daughter's 10th birthday, we did a 60's type slumber party using a lot of neon colors, lava lamps, etc.  She had a blast and her friends still talk about it.  I made vanilla cupcakes and just put some neon food dye drops in each cupcake and swirled them prior to baking them. I also used vanilla icing but I bought the spray food dye and just swirled the colors on the icing to make it look psychedelic.  The girls loved them, and they were fun to make.  You can find the spray food color at Michael's or Hobby Lobby in their cake decorating aisle.  I also went to different Dollar Stores and bought bright neon colored containers and put all different kinds of funky candies in them. (like pop rocks, suckers and gum that stain your mouth, super-sour stuff...etc..) Hope that helps....
