I want to prepare my 2.5 year old for preschool. I've taught him his basic colors, counting to 20, counting items, different animals/sounds and we play a memory game with picture cards.

I am out of ideas on other things that I can teach him. Any ideas?

  1. Most important thing is if he has had the experience of going to classes before, music together, swimming, dance/movement, whatever it doesn't matter. The experience of going somewhere where there is a teacher, who we all listen to, and other children who also listen to the teacher, and we all do the same thing at the same time. At 2 the most important thing to learn from going to school is the "going to school" experience.

  2. You've basically covered it. Now all he needs in to explore his social life with his peers, and enrolling him in day care is just the way to do.

You've done well, best of luck!

  3. Teach him as much as he can comprehend without forcing him.letters, even how to read, if its possible..

  4. I have four boys my oldest being 15 and he is a freshman in high school and is on the honor roll and my youngest is 22 months and the best advice I would give is READ READ READ! Reading to them is so important and will really help them all through school and also give them a kick start for pre-school. Don't try to push them to read just you keep doing the reading and you will truly be amazed how much it helps. My 15 year old at four was telling me to use my imagination and still has an excellent vocabulary and he pays very good attention. Good luck it sounds like you are off to a REALLY good start!

  5. Well, what I found from experience is that the hardest thing for children that age to adjust to in preschool is the behavioral and social aspects - not so much the educational.

It's obvious that you're a good parent doing your part.  Just remember to spend as much, if not more, time preparing them for the big change in their daily routine.  It can be scary and overwhelming for them.

    But, here's a developmental checklist for children 0 - 5 years...

    Here's another checklist ...

And here's a good article about "3 Things Your Preschooler Should Know"

    Good luck.

  6. Well i would rather suggest you to prepare him, more than in knowledge, in attitude. I mean, every time you talk to him about school let him know that is like getting a gift.and if there s something you don't like him to do, tell him as a punish that he won 't go to school and with this programing he will always find school like a reward and will enjoy it. I have done that myself with my three kids and they are the best at their schools. Good luck

  7. You have intellectualy perpared but now emotionally. Before my nephew started pre-school my sister went to play dates at her friends house to get him used to being around others his age in different enviroments. Obviously he still didn't want to go but it was easier for him to adjust instead of just throwing him in to a room without mom or dad.

  8. Talk to him (not baby talk) and read to him.  That's plenty good enough - oh, and teach him to SHARE.  That's a BIG thing in school - that and sitting still!

  9. You can teach him alphabets through Blocks.u can teach him to recognise Numbers, birds animals vegetables  flowers, fruits, wild animals ,pets, sea fishes, different shapes,f.Use flip cards frame stories for him.singing rhymes with actions, PL purchase some casstetes CDs ,picture books. Any way he is too small to learn more don't pressurise , leave him in a pklay school there he can automatically learn,

  10. There's no better way to prepare your child for preschool than to read, talk,  and sing to them.  All in all, knowing your colors, numbers, animal sounds will eventually come for any child. You need to go a step further.  If you want your child to be really ahead, more self confident, and prepared for school than just read, sing, and talk to them.  Reading, singing, and talking to children everyday will be the most rewarding experience for you and your child.  Studies show that for a child to master anything, they must practice it a thousand times.  Sounds difficult if you don't make it apart of your daily routine.

One more note,  music is the predecessor of mathematics not to mention it helps with your child's emotional development.  Good luck!
