Ideas to deal with depression after surgery?

My Dad (70 years old) had open heart surgery Aug 4th. He was released from the hospital 6 days later. Everything went fine and recovery was fast. He is taking pain pills, but doesn't like to. He says if he takes them, he feels physically better but doesn't want to do anything. Not taking the pills, he feels awful and doesn't want to do anything. He has also had a major diet change. He told me today he has been feeling depressed. I don't live close by and he doesn't have a computer. He does have my mother with him at all times. I am sure he is missing his golf game too. He is going to therapy & doing everything advised by the doctors. I am hoping somebody could give advice or ideas on how to "cheer him up". Let me know if you need more info/details. THANX for your time.

  1. i v heard people getting depressed after a big surgery. is there any way, you could call some of his friends that is definately what he needs. alot of times friends stay away for fear of wearing yhe person out.like you know every ones coming around. then all of a sudden, theres no one to talk to. is there any family member close?write him lots of letters or happy-funny cards ,pictures. does he like to read? do you think when he does'nt take them   (the pills). they he may be going through withdrawls?i think that maybe you need to talk to him about what he takes?how often?look it up . you can get addicted quick to narcotics. good luck.i hope every thing comes out alright.could maybe your mom can throw a small get together for him.?let him know his buddies care.

  2. Depression following heart surgery is not uncommon.  He or your mom should let his physician know ASAP.  He may need an anti-depressant.  Good luck.

  3. Your Dad is doing well considering he has had such a major surgery.  I think depression is normal when the body experiences such a trauma.  If you can why not get him a WI and the golf game he could play at home in front of the TV.  If you can't afford this get him some of his favorite tapes or a membership to one of the video delivery services.  A computer would be great too so that he could keep in touch with you .  I pray that he has a speedy recovery and bless you for being such a good daughter.

  4. He's a live and doing well after a major surgery, I would like to think that should bring some cheer to someone's life!  He apparently has a child who cares about him very much, and a wife who loves him very much.  What more could a man ask for?  He should enjoy the simple things he has, because they're probably the most important right now.
