Question:

Ideas to get rats to interact with each other?

My new fawn hooded baby just got out of quarantine last night so I introduced them on neutral territory. They did alright but they won't interact together. My two oldest stay up on the hammock while the new baby sleeps in the corner on the floor and rarely comes up.

Any ideas?

  1. I would suggest setting up a rattie playground. Just buy one of those plastic kiddie pools from WalMart (very cheap) and put some bedding on the bottom. This way it is neutral ground, so the old rats don't feel they have to defend "their" territory. At first, just leave it at that. Let them play with eachother and get to know eachothers smells and such. Do this every day for about 20 minutes. After several days, begin to add toys that they can play with together, and make their playdates longer. They should begin to bond in no time. No guaruntees, but this should work. Just be patient. Good things come to those who wait. Hope this helps!

  2. Maybe you can get them to learn to know each other by putting them in the bath tub with nothing in there so the rats will investigate each other and get used to each other.  You cant make them like each other, but all you can do is try.

  3. you need to introduce the baby to the older rats 1 at a time. to do this, use an extra cage (assuming you have one) place the baby and 1 of your older rats in a cage and the other rat in a cage. leave it like this for 2 days, then switch the other rats. also, when you hold a older rat, hold the baby 2.

  4. This happened to me before, i put them in a little corral where they couldn't hide or climb and they started just wandering around exploring, and they soon started sniffing the new girl, now they are always together, the little group, hope this helped

  5. Give them time. The fact that they aren't fighting is a good sign, but it doesn't mean they will warm up to each other immediately. They need time to bond on their own.
