Ideas to see if I can be a Veterinarian?

I want to be a Veterinarian but I am afraid that once I see the animal bleeding or have to operate, I might faint or feel sick. I will be starting school in the Spring but I don't want to go through it unless I know I can do this. Any suggestions?

  1. Try working part-time as a vet's helper during the summer in order to be exposed to all kinds of procedures as well as dilemmas You have a lot of time before you really have to make a decision but becoming a vet needs to stem from a huge love for animals and their well being and you need a passion for the work. It involves a lot of thought , commitment and education to become a vet.

Go slow and enjoy each step.

    V. Job

  2. I thought I might be scared too, but then I got into FFA, and had to give my pig shots daily, he got attacked by dogs, then my lamb had an infected ear tag that I had to pull out, and I dealt with it no problem.  Just try practicing.  Do you have dogs?  If so, next time you get them their yearly shots, go to your local feed store and buy the shots and try doing it yourself.  It should be a piece of cake if you have what it takes to be a vet.

  3. Ask your family's vet if you can observe a couple different surgeries and see how you do.  Most will be happy to help someone interested in being a vet.  Also, most college biology courses will have a dissection component, that may go a long way in figuring out whether you can deal with cutting animals open.  It's also important to note that you can get over squeamishness with time and practice.  The road to being a vet is long, I would imagine that you would quickly learn to control any queasiness you might feel at the 'blood and guts' component of things.

  4. The easiest way is to go to your nearest animal shelter, and ask to be a volunteer.

    They should normally say yes.

The bad thing is the most common job would be cleaning out the cages, etc, but you'll be around animals and will know how to handle them. Chances are they'll let you see the operations as well, maybe even help if you lucky.
