William Adams the real life character who John Blackthorne was based on in the Book and Mini Series Shogun.  After being shipwrecked in Japan he somehow became close to one of the major daimyos in Japan.  His influence gave an edge to him that changed the balance of power and led to a Shogunate that lasted 265 years the longest dynasty in history anywhere and ending centuries of civil war.
