Identify female rural midwest painter, fine art, figures, primitive (article 10-20 yrs ago in Time or ?)?

I have wondered for years who she was, the work was stunning. Can't find anything, my info is just too vague. She had little or no training and lived in a farmhouse, I think. She was being discovered and therefore the article in a major magazine, I think Time or Newsweek.
