How recent?  The shift from local mom and pops to major national big box stores has been going on for about 2 decades but is still relevant.  Shift from down towns to malls or strip centers and more recently back to down towns. Most recently with the decline there's already published studies about shifting to more economical shopping habits like discount stores and using coupons.
