I remember reading a children's book when I was a young teenager (which was around 20 years ago, but the book could have been older) about an elementary school class and its teacher. The book was episodic short stories, each about 2 pages, and each story featured a few of the children who all had very distinct characteristics. There were two boys that were best friends; one had a very round head and could not stand on his head, but the other could stand on either of their heads easily. One girl was quite artistic and could draw amazingly quickly; she might have been able to draw a kitten in twelve seconds, for instance. Lewis, I think, was the janitor's name, and he loved catsup on all of his food. The teacher was extremely competent, although she had a real challenge dealing with dead rats that were constantly trying to get into her classroom.

What was the name of this book? Was it a series? I want to buy it for my daughter and can't remember for the life of me... Thanks!

  1. sideways stories from wayside school and the other 4 books in that series by lewis sachar.

  2. I know what books you're talking about, the Wayside school books by Louis Sachar (author of Holes). My teacher used to read them to us in 2nd grade, they're so hilarious!

    The books are:

    *Sideways Stories From Wayside School

    *Wayside School is Falling Down

*Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger

And then there are silly math books:

    *Sideways Arithmetic From Wayside School

*More Sideways Arithmetic From Wayside School

I think John and oe are the two boys with the head-stands. Bebe Gunn was the artist, the Janitor was Louis, and Mrs Jewls was the teacher on the 30th story.

  3. I'm not quite sure. Is it Sideways Stories from Wayside School? I really liked those, and it sounds familiar.
