Identify this book please?

Question

It's about a guy that was hitch hiking to college, and hooks up with a girl in a small town. When her fiance shows up unexpectedly, he's wrongly accused of rape. Following a severe beating from the town sheriff he confesses to a crime he didn't commit. After spending 8 years in prison, he returns to exact revenge on the sheriff and the small town.

I believe this book was written in the late 80's, and it was paperback of less than 300 pages. No idea about the author or title.
