Identify this music symbol?

  1. Where does it appear exactly? In front of note? If so maybe it's an older way of writing a double sharp.  It looks very familiar, but I can't quite place it.


  2. --Edit: Could it be that this is just another way of writing the "Dal Segno" symbol? - This would mean "when you come to the second sign, go back to the first sign and start playing from there again", though usually there would be "D.S." written above the stave, instead of a second symbol, and it doesn't really make sense to have it at the beginning of the piece (in this case you would simply write "Da Capo".

    Look up "Dal Segno" on google or wikipedia - it looks quite similar.

  3. WOW... had AP music theory and all bands in High School - still never seen that.  My best guess would be some type of rest or coda.
