Question:

Identifying type of ant?

I live on Cape Cod (Massachusetts), so I live in New England. My sister freaked out tonight because there was an ant in her bed that was "like an inch long". I figured she was exagerating, as she does with creepy crawly things in her bed, but alas...it was indeed an inch long...at least! It didn't have wings, was black, and HUGE...for an ant at least. It appeared to be similar to, if not, a carpenter ant. I just didn't think they got that big...is it possible?

PS...i didn't kill it, so don't worry...i set it free outside via a mug with a book over it( :
