This past weekend a bag of mine was stolen from my car. The bag contained my W-2s and tax papers, along with other business documents and personal items. How do I go about putting an alert on my credit? Do, can, or should I "freeze" it? Anyone been in this unfortunate situation?

  1. You will need to alert the credit reporting agencies - Experian, Transunion, and Equifax that you had personal information stolen.  They can put a fraud alert on your file.  Which means if the person who stole your purse tries to open an account the company issuing the credit will have to call you to verify that you are the one trying to get credit.

  2. You will need  credit reporting company life lock is best company for credit reporting check it http://w3productreview.com/lifelock-revi...

  3. I would put a freeze on it since they have your social security info and your complete name and address. Social Security has a fraud dept. Their toll free # 1-800-269-0271

  4. You need to call the credit card companies, banks, etc. for any account you have that may be compromised.  Tell them what happened, put out a fraud alert.  The sooner you contact them, the less you will be liable for.  You may also want to close the accounts and have new account numbers issued.

There is a free e-book on identity theft and it includes a chapter on "what to do if the worst happens".  You should at least read that chapter for further information.
