Question:

Identity as an art project? Artists that deal with the theme of identity?

For my next GCSE art project, I have to deal with the theme of identity [what makes me me, what contributes to my character, and what makes others themselves]

Does anybody have any ideas for drawings/paintings/photographs that would be good for this theme?

I already have a few ideas floating around, but I find it useful to ask for others opinions.

Also, what other artists do you know of that deal with the theme of identity? I know Picasso is one of them, but I can't use him because I've already worked on his in a previous project.

Any ideas?

  1. Cindy Sherman is probably an artist you should at least look into in relation to this project.

"By turning the camera on herself, Cindy Sherman has built a name as one of the most respected photographers of the late twentieth century. Although, the majority of her photographs are pictures of her, however, these photographs are most definitely not self-portraits. Rather, Sherman uses herself as a vehicle for commentary on a variety of issues of the modern world: the role of the woman, the role of the artist and many more"
