  1. Okay, how about some reality from someone who is owned by Cockatoo's, did rescue work with Cockatoo's and at one time used to breed Cockatoo's(like a moron)?

You CAN NOT have a Cockatoo in a townhouse. They 'scream' twice a day and it is an ear piercing, borderline glass shattering scream. You will not watch tv. You will not talk on the phone. I promise you, within one week you will get moving orders or the police will be called to you to stop the noise.

Cockatoo's are 'chainsaw's with wings'. They can and WILL shred anything they can get their beaks on including walls, floors and furniture.

They can snap metal bars AND fingers with that beak. Make a bird like that really mad and you just might need plastic surgery to correct the damage it can do to your face.

At about five years old they go through puberty and God only knows what can happen. Sometimes they revert completely and no one can get close to the once sweet baby anymore.

They demand CONSTANT attention and if they don't get it they frequently pluck themselves bald and/or mutilate themselves. Cockatoo's are notorious for developing behavioral problems even when you do EVERYTHING right. These birds are NOT like owning a Cockatiel.

And, when that bird feels neglected or gets to the point where he's plucking himself he will scream 24/7 non stop.

Friends and relatives don't come to my house because of my Goffin Cockatoo and my husband's bird. They're sisters. I have to live a safe distance from any potential neighbors and I can't open my windows in the spring and summer.

I love my Goffin, Goblin. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade her for anything in this world. But if I had it to do all over again I'm not sure if I would have.

I too fell in love with a Cockatoo. They are beautiful birds, I know. They call them the Teddy Bears of the bird world for a reason. A loving Cockatoo will turn over in the crook of your arm and coo like a baby. It just makes your heart swell to five times it's normal size to see that sort of trust from a bird. Don't be fooled. I did months worth of research. I thought I was smart and I was going to be one of those successfull Cockatoo owners who had the best bird on the planet. I challenge anyone who says they have a well behaved Cockatoo that they've 'never had a problem' with. They lie.

If my husband gets within two feet of me Goblin will try to take his face off. If he has his bird out and I get too close then his will try to take MY face off. It's a nightmare. They chase my cat around the house just because they knows it p*sses the cat off.

They are also escape artists and keeping one in a cage is like trying to secure a bank vault. If it can be taken apart a Cockatoo will do it.

Please reconsider. Unless you can be a stay at home bird mom and you plan to be able to remain a stay at home bird mom for the next thirty plus years, don't do it.

They don't react well to change. If you're there all the time and then suddenly you're forced to go off to work they're entire temperment can change in the blink of an eye.

Do you have children? Cockatoo's are perpetual two year olds. They demand constant attention always. They don't grow up, they don't take no for an answer, and they NEVER leave home.

Look through your local want ads and newspapers. There are constantly grown Cockatoo's for sale cheap in any city in this country. There's a reason for that. It's because those people desperate to sell that bird have learned the hard way what I am telling you now.

The flip side? Once in a while you do get lucky and get a good one. My Goblin is a pain in the @ss but I think I got a pretty good one. I still have all of my fingers and no major scars.

Please...research, research, research. Don't buy a Cockatoo on a whim. And if you're determined to have one then DO NOT get one that's grown and wait until you've moved into a house. You will never be able to live close to people as long as you have that bird.

I'd be happy to send you audio of what it sounds like around here when Goblin and Phantom start with their screaming..at 7 am...at 11 pm...whenever someone pulls in the driveway... and every time the dog in the back yard barks.

  2. Oh boy. I hate to rain on yours or anyone else's parade, but you need to consider the responsibilities you'll have if you get the cockatoo. They are gorgeous birds yes, but big and not as easy to care for as the smaller cage birds. Before you go and spend your chunk of money, I'd like you to take a look at this site. Please read and consider everything. Many cockatoos and other large caged birds (and even the owners themselves!) have suffered from their owner's unwise decisions.

I love birds, cockatoos included. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting him/her, I just want you to make a smart decision. If you're willing to give it proper care and love, go for it...but if you don't think you can handle it, try to restrain from getting one just yet.

Good luck and I hope you make the best decision. And if you do decide to get one, hope you enjoy having it's company! :)

  3. determine how much extra money you have to spend. You wouldn't want to spend money you don't have, but if it makes you happy then go for it. Cockatoos are great birds and make the environment a much better place, so in my opinion I would do it.

  4. plz get it you love it then all you do is give it love

  5. i would get it if i really wanted it
