Iestyn Harris speaks highly of departing Welsh skipper Lee Briers - Four Nations
While acknowledging the efforts of long-time Welsh captain, Lee Briers, who confirmed his retirement from his on-field role on Friday, November 11, Wales coach Iestyn Harris lauded his talent and tagged his exit as a fitting one. His final performance will
be staged on Sunday at the Glyndŵr University Racecourse Stadium in Wrexham where Wales will tussle against the favourites of Gillette Four Nations, Australia.
However, his exit news came alongside the decision by the Wales Rugby League quarters, who wish to harness the skipper’s capabilities, by taking him on board the coaching staff under Iestyn Harris’ flagship.
Harris recently reigned in the coaching responsibilities at the Welsh side. He is appreciative of the players’ potential and is willing to benefit from his skills while being part of his coaching squad.
While expressing his views about the 33-year-old skipper, Harris stated, "Lee's played against Australia a few times in his career and it's a fitting tribute to what he's done for Wales Rugby League to finish against arguably the best team in the world and
the team that everybody wants the opportunity to play against. To finish his Welsh career on this sort of a high, whatever the result, is certainly a good send off for him"
The coach further added that the players are expected to perform well in weekend game, in order to honour their departing skipper, who has led the Welsh side for last two years, with power packed performance for almost ten years.
Briers has been representing Wales since 1998. His elaborate stint at Wales has been studded with many feats, which will grant him all the more reason to depart with satisfaction. His last encounter against Kangaroos on Sunday, November 12, will win him
his 23rd cap for his country. It has been expected that Briers will boot at least a goal in his send off performance that will take his net score to 100 points for Wales.
Prior to this, the player had also announced his retirement in 2007, after his side failed to make through for the Rugby League World Cup 2008. However, decision back then was made to be taken back as the player made his come-back in 2010.In comparison to
last time, this time, with the coaching role already offered the decision appears to be his final take.
