2. Butane reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. If 12.0g of butane were consumed, what mass of water should have been produced? (Show your work using unitary rates)

  1. 2 H2 + O2 >> 2 H2O

    moles H2 = 5.0 / 2.016 = 2.48

    Moles O2 = 5.0 / 32 =0.156 ( limiting reactant)

    moles water = 2 x 0.156 = 0.312

    Mass water = 0.312 x 18.02 =5.62 g

    2 C4H10 +13 O2 >> 8 CO2 + 10 H2O

    moles butane = 12.0 / 58.124 g/mol =0.206

    moles water = 0.206 x 10/2 = 1.03

    mass water = 1.03 x 18.02 =18.6 g
