  1. If there were a robbery they might need to lock the store down or if a clerk has to leave the front of the store for any length of time, the doors have to be locked.

    The real reason is that when the store is being set up - not yet opened - there is inventory and equipment inside that needs to be protected.  Also, in the event of emergencies the store may need to be locked down.  If one ever goes out of business, they need to secure the closing inventory.

  8. The doors are locked when the clerk is in the back room - say to accept a shipment, or something of that nature....also perhaps when they have to use the bathroom......
