If about 94,635 rapes are reported to law enforcement in 2004, how many do you think weren't?

Note: Statistics don't include statuatory rape, or male sexual assault victims...

Well, I've heard that 9 out of ten people are sexually assaulted in their lifetimes (in the U.S.) at least once. *Everyone* I know well has admitted to me some kind of sexual assault, not necessarily rape, but something. My fiance was sexually assaulted by his uncle and his friends father. My brother and three of his friends (possibly more) were abused by a priest. My sister has been raped many times starting when she was 11 (at knife point). My mother was kidnapped and raped repeatedly for a week, shot and left for dead at 13. I was molested at 10 and raped three times by "friends." My cousins have all either been raped or molested. My friends... it goes on like this.

I figure that the real statistics are unbelievable. I only ever tried to report the first rape and the cops laughed so hard ("why were you out at 1 am if you didn't want it?") that I walked out and never bothered again. In fact, I stopped saying no for years because I'd rather pretend I wasn't there and just let it happen than get raped. My sister never reported any of her rapes. It was her father's friend and her father threatened her if she told. It was my brother's friends and she didn't want him to get in trouble. It was her husbands friends and he threatened her if she told, etc. etc. My mother's family moved her out of state (it was a couple of bikers.. I still won't even name the gang for fear of them). Who's gonna rat out the priest? The father? The brother? The boyfriend? The friend?

It's way, way more prevalent than we think and it makes people suffer for the rest of their lives. Very, very sad.

Wow, hate to even think of how high the numbers might be, especially if the victim knows the rapist.
