There is special insurance you can buy for travel outside the United States. Typically, you can contact your insurance company and inquire about what they would recommend, or if you are driving, there are usually agencies on the way to the border who sell day trip insurance for Mexico.

I live in Arizona, and we usually stop at one of those places on the way to Rocky Point.  

In many border towns, you can park your car some where and walk across to shop.  Abrigonnes is one of those towns.

Many companies do cover you in Mexico but only within 75 miles of the border.  Check with your agent.

But even if they do it's always advisable to buy Mexican insurance at the border.  Accidents in Mexico are different than here.  They are considered a felony.  The Mexican insurance at the border will give you the help you need if you get in an accident in Mexico.

check with your insurance, they[some] cover an area of about 30 miles into mexico at least ours do. Or you can just purchase insurance  for a trip to cover certain miles into the interior of mexico
