Senator McCarthy's witch hunts were over 60 years ago. I must say that lots has changed since then.

Americans are entitled to join any party they wish. I wouldn't even say that those joining the Communist Party will suffer for it, either.

Yes but I don't think McCarthy had a problem with people being communist as much as communist in influential areas of our society such as movies and government.  Many of the people he did expose were communist and some were acually plants from the soviet Union.  None were ever jailed for their beliefs just exposed for what they were.

You can join the communist party of America, legally.

But do not assume from that that you will not suffer for doing so.

Being a member of a political party of another country while a citizen of the USA? Well, you are likely to violate the laws of that other country. (as for instance making a contribution to a Canadian party)
