  1. Airports and train stations must be three letters. If there isn't a third letter that makes sense, they add an X.

For a city best known by it's 2-letter abbreviation, it makes sense for both stations to be LAX.

  2. Three letter codes are so 19th century! Really! like NYC= New York City  Cities with two letters had a random letter added Los Angeles= LAX   Boston is either BOS or BMA. Railroads invented them. Airlines used them because the people who travelled allready knew the system. The Green Yellow Red of traffic lights and standard time zones are also railroad inventions.

  3. maybe cuz they're both in L.A. and at union station u can take the subway and get to the airport from there.

  4. I don't think there was any intent to confuse.  The airport 3-letter abbreviations have been around longer than Amtrak, so Amtrak just adopted most of them.

BTW - there is a Flyaway bus that connects LAX (the airport) and LA Union Station.  It is something like $3 or $3.50 each way, and runs every half hour during the day and every hour between midnight-5 am, 7 days a week.
