Usually you look at two counts... medals overall and number of gold medals won.

When you consider the amount of money that the Chinese have invested AND the number of people the funnel through their athletic system... its amazing the US is as competitive as it is.

I totally agree with the above poster, a lot of people do not know that they do what the USSR used to do, they take a kid with promise at a young age and then that sport becomes that child's only focus along with his education. Basically a pro system since a VERY early age. What really impressed me is that Australia does as well as it does with as few people as it has.
