If Detroit Tigers are comfortable spending big, fans should not worry – MLB News
If the Detroit Tigers are comfortable making investments for the future, the fans should not make a fuss of it. Every transaction tells us a little about the buyer. Five year $80 million deal is a considerable transaction and it should explain everything
about the Tigers.
On another level, it is a commitment a player makes to the club that he will remain healthy and contribute at a high level to help his side achieve the desired goals. Tigers’ signing Anibal Sanchez for $80 million deal tells us a lot about how desperate
they are to win the World Series title in the next season.
Last year, the Tigers were the most successful team in the American League. Although they lost to the San Francisco Giants in the best of seven-match World Series, they will open the next season as the favourites to win the prestigious title.
“The Tigers chose to pay Sanchez millions of dollars more per year. Whatever they've seen of Porcello forced their hands. That also tells us the Tigers view their budget constraints differently than an average team — or outsider — does,” said Kurt Mensching
of detroitnews.com.
“Whenever a team hands out a large contract, often to a player who isn't even recognized as being the best at his position, people begin to talk about overpaying. The study of sabermetrics has led to a lot of articles about teams getting the best bang for
their bucks. You do that with young and cost controlled players — such as Porcello”, he added.
Signing Sanchez will only help the cause. Sanchez, who was reintroduced at Comerica Park late on Monday, put up some dominant performances on the mound last season. The Tigers wanted to retain him but they wanted to see what other Major League Baseball teams
could offer him.
Eventually, they decided to spend $80 million on a man who is certainly capable of beating the best in the business. The Tigers are serious about what they are doing. The want something badly and if they can afford to make such financial commitments, the
fans should not worry about it. It will be interesting to see if Sanchez can do the needful in the next season to help the Tigers prevail.
