Question:

If Federer makes it to all the clay finals, including RG, and loses to Nadal in each, will Nadal #1?

If Roger makes it to all the clay finals that he is entered in, and loses to Nadal in those, and the same goes for Rolland Garros (Roger loses to Nadal in final), will Nadal have garnered enough points to take over the number one spot? I see that Nadal is playing Barcelona but Federer isn't. I don't know how to calculate the points well enough to figure this out. But last week Nadal gained only 100 points over Federer for winning in Monte Carlo. I assume that RG has more points - for the winner and the finalist. Thanks for the info if you know.

  1. nope because federer keeps making it to the finals on clay and wins the other slams on grass and hard he will stay ahead of the 1 court wonder nadal, and besides he will beat nadal at the french open this year if nadal makes it to the final..////

  2. No because he is therefore defending his points and the season continues onto grass and hard where Fedex will most likely dominate!

  3. no

  4. No he won't be #1. In fact he won't even cut Federer's lead. In fact, Federer will actually extend his lead.

The scenario you described means Federer will improve on last year's performance, while Nadal would only match last year's performance.

  5. No, Federer would still maintain a lead in that scenario, because he lost early last year in Rome, earning only 75 points.  So if he were to reach the Rome final, losing to Nadal, he would earn 350 points, for a gain of 275 from last year.  By winning Rome this year, Nadal's points would stay the same because he won Rome last year too.  In Hamburg, where Federer beat Nadal in the final, if the result were reversed this year, Nadal would earn 500 points for a gain of 150 from last year, in which he earned 350, and Federer would lose that 150.  But combined with the Rome results, Federer would have a net gain of 50 points over his total for those events last year, whereas Nadal would have a net gain of 150 points.  Nadal will have only closed the current 1120 point gap between him and Federer by 100 points.  With that 1120 point lead Federer currently has over Nadal, it is impossible for Nadal to overtake him until after Wimbledon, and Federer would have to lose early at one of the clay court events (Rome, Hamburg, or RG) AND also lose Wimbledon.  Wow, that was a mouthful.

  6. For the clay season the only place where Nadal can gain some points is Hamburg because Federer won there last year. So, if things happen as you've put them (I hope the Nadal part stays, would like to see Djokovic in the finals), Nadal will gain only a few points and would not overtake Federer during the clay season. He needs to continue his winning ways and hope that Federer loses earlier in a tourney so that Fed will lose more points.

  7. No! Because Federer would defending his same points as last year! Federer needs to lose early in the up coming tournaments for Nadal to get  a shot at number 1! Rafa also has to win wimbledon and he lots and lots of points to defend in the clay season! I hope Nadal becomes number 1 some day :) He really deserves it !

  8. no

if nadal wins at least one more slam this year besides roland garros, he just might be able to hit that one spot.

  9. Nadal will not be #1, because they would have just defended their points. The gap will still remain. Though I doubt if Nadal will reach all the finals, or win all of them. He was let off the hook, inexplicably at Monte Carlo by the FedExpriess. He will not be that lucky again.

  10. no... they defend the same points... so the gap is still the same.. unless... one of them didn't reach finals... that they need to defend...
