  1. Nope, sorry, but even if he wins the whole thing, he doesn't gain any points, because he won it last year, so he can only fortify is No.2 ranking.

Federer's best chance of becoming No.1 is next year, when Nadal has to protect several points, then Federer can strike, and that's when he's most likely to rocket back to No. 1

  2. Nope. In fact, Federer HAS to win to preserve his no. 2 ranking. He won last year, which means he gained 1000 points. Roger has to defend all of these points. He has nothing to gain in this tournament - even if he wins, it just solidifies his position as No. 2.

Say he loses in the first round (no chance of that). He loses 995 points. He's 825 points behind Djokovic, so by losing those points would bring him to No.3 if Djokovic defends his 700 points from last year for being a finalist.

  3. He cannot get his #1 ranking back after this US Open no matter what happens. Nadal is defending just 150 or so points and the difference between Nadal and fed is 770 and fed is defending 1000 points which means he can't do better than last year. The only thing that can happen is Fed losing his #2 ranking and that will happen if Djokovic wins the US Open.

  4. NO, fed can't gain any points from the us open since he won last year so theres no way fed can regain number 1 in the foreseeable future

  5. i hate federer  goooooo nadal!

  6. no

  7. some_guy is right. the best that federer can do this year is defend his title---which, hopefully, he can do. if he loses the open, he needs to rest until the tournament of champions at the end of the season. he can use a defending win there to start 2009 off right. 2009, it is nadal and djokovic who will have to defend points. federer could very well spring back off of this scenario.

  8. No, federer has nothing to gain in this tournament this year cause he won it last year. I'm not sure if he can regain it this year. I don't think he can unless Nadal has very poor season.

His best chance is next year when Nadal has to defend all his points and Federer has chances to gain some.

  9. No. He can only lose points. Since he's defending his points from last year, if he were to lose at all (even in the finals) he'd still lose points. If Nadal makes it past the fourth round (because he lost in the fourth round to Ferrer last year) he can only gain points and not lose them. Djokovic can only gain points if he wins the tournament considering he lost to Fed in last years final.
