  1. If the courts are daft enough to find for him against W.Hill, and they could, as apparently he could claim compensation on top. Well then i reckon we are in with a good chance.Crikey i could retire!

  2. Friggin' ridiculous.

  3. If you have asked them to exclude you under their 'self exclusion' provisions and they didn't do so, you MIGHT have a case. Indeed, Calvert might have a case. He might win. The case might set a precedent and it might not. William Hill might appeal and bankrupt him in the process. That's a lot of mights and too many for me to deal with this late in the afternoon.

  4. stephen g is being very presumptuous i agree with trinity. if he had won would he of given the money back of course not its just sour grapes because he lost. and if he knew he had a gambling problem why didn't he seek professional help from gamblers anonymous. all i can say is i hope he isnt getting legal aid

  5. He won't

  6. Have YOU asked them to stop taking your bets?  If not then you don't have a case against them.

  7. Hello All.

It seems that some discussing this are ill informed and perhaps therefore should not comment.

Gambling addiction in its true form is classed in the medical profession as a mental illness. If Mr. Calvert felt it was getting out of control and he could not trust himself, he then relied on Gambling legislation and the "self exclusion" offered by William Hill to problem gamblers.

An addiction will normally win over common sense so Mr Calvert therefore informed W hill of his concerns and said do not take any more bets from me as i recognise i have an addiction. If he felt he could control it he would have no need to do this and would have exercised self control.

However he felt that the addiction may get the better of him so he put a protective measure in place and W Hill agreed not to accept any more wagers from him and then they went and did exactly the opposite and allowed a Known addicted gambler who had specifically informed him of his problem to lose a substantial amount. The other bookmakers who he self excluded with refused any attempts to open another account or accept wagers

Are you aware of what william hill do to successful punters who win regularly? they close their account and prevent them from opening another. why did they not spot Mr. Calverts new account/ simple answer. He had a history of losing and they knew that trend would continue.

They agreed to self exclude him and then went back on their word. End of Story

however such is the income in tax derived for the state. I doubt the judge dare find against William HIll

  8. this is a transcript of the conversation  mr calvert had with william hill he opted for a 6 month self exclusion its obvious william hills communications are bad or they are just greedy trying to take more money off a man with a major gambling problem DO YOU REALLY THINK W/HILL DIDNT KNOW IT WAS THE SAME GRAHAM CALVERT COME ON. i say greedy william hill should have honoured the self exclusion policy and not allowed him to bet i hope he wins for the sake of the small gambler who these bookies really make there money out of

J: "Hi Mr Calvert , you're through to John, team leader here. I understand you want to close the account?"

    GC: "Yes please, yeah."

J : "Can you tell me why that is please?"

GC: "'Cos it's just far too easy to gamble."

J: "Right, so do you want to be self-excluded at this point then? Which means you will not be able to open the account with us again within the next six months?"

    GC: "That's right, aye."

J: "Right, well, what I'll do is I'll pass on all the relevant information."

    GC: "Right."

J: "The account will now be closed, you will not be able to open it within the next six months."

After a discussion about returning the remaining funds in the account to Mr Calvert, he's told by J: "But the money will be returned to your account and the account will now be closed for the next six months.

"You will not be allowed to open it under any circumstances. You will not be allowed to bet over the phone with William Hill."

But two months later, Mr Calvert did start betting with William Hill again by opening a new account in his own name.

  9. Graham Calvert is just a no mark who wants to put the blame for his addiction on anyones doorstep but his own. He would be better going to Gamblers Anonymous.

  10. If they closed his account, what was to stop him going off to another bookmaker? He's an adult, and obviously one with a gambling addiction - and for that he deserves some sympathy - but to then turn around and blame someone else for his problems is just a bit daft really.

  11. this case is ridiculous. mr calvert is an adult who is(or should be ) responsible for his own actions.  william hill are a business & should not be under any legal obligations to anybody even if they are asked not to accept any more of the individuals  bets by that individual. this man is trying it on if he had won he wouldn't be moaning ! i have backed horses for 20 years & it is my choice to do so, i am not forced by any of the bookies to put a' lucky 15' on ! i also drink alcohol, used to smoke cigars, used to play rugby & sometimes eat macdonalds but these are all my choice & i'm not (or used to be )forced into doing any of these things  as an adult i accept (or accepted)the effects of these choices eg i broke my arm playing rugby but it was my choice & nobody's fault  so if i lose a tenner on the favourite in the 1st race  saturday it is up to me!!!

i am sick of people saying addiction is an illness, it is not cancer, asthma, alzheimers et al are  illnesses & it is disrespectful of people to compare alcholics, drug addicts, gambling addicts etc to people with genuine illnesses. i spent 3 months in hospital following an industrial accident & some of the people i saw & met were truly ill & had serious problems not being unable to control themselves in the bookies is not one of them !!!
