Question:

If Greece is a wonderful place, why do it's supporters dismiss dissent?

On Yahoo answers, there is a group of nationalistic boors who portray Greece as some paradise, which I will agree is true in some part.

However, there are quite a lot of negative things that are swept under the rug that foreign travelers need to know about Greece before they can make an informed decision.

There are so many other nice countries where friendlier people, better service, and better prices prevail and travelers have the right to know that.

I didn't know that Yahoo answers was like North Korea, Iran, or Cuba where you are not allowed to say your opinion or show dissent. I would think that of all people, Greeks should know something about democracy but I think maybe those Greeks passed on many millennia ago.

  1. As a foreigner in Greece - I love Greece, the country - it's really beautiful. But it's not perfect ......  I think tourists can make their own mind up towards the country and its people by their experiences during their vacation - their experience will determine whether they return again ... or not.  On the other hand I would let people know the negatives you are likely to come up against (if asked) if the person is thinking of moving to Greece and especially if buying an apartment - (I was at an architect's office last night screaming my head off because he's had 3 yrs to complete a building in which my friends have bought an apartment  - and only live there 2 months of the year ..... and he's done absolutely nothing since last summer!) or joining the Greek workforce. But as a vacation place it's a great place to visit and that's what concerns most of the users here on Greece travel section ... and NOT if 'Greek men are the best lovers?' or 'Who's the best Greek singer?' etc

Ralph - you know how to wind Greeks up - I believe you had (or have) a great time in Greece - despite her faults.

  2. One more of our esteemed foreign friends that prefer to live in Greece and yet find everything negative about it.

No one single country in the whole world is absolutely perfect for its inhabitants both indigenous and foreign and although either can complain they should not go out in pubblic and advertise their dirty linen. Same as you will do in your house. You will not go out on the neighborhood and announced the problems you have in it.

Why therefore is not acceptable to keep some facts not said ?

And how is that connected to democracy?

If you want, you can do that , but certainly you must be prepared to face the responces of those who feel their country is insulted. Same as you will do, for your own country.

  3. If you are not from skopje why every time someone calls you a mokedonkey gets reported?

As for your question, if the travelers want to know something official they better call their embassies. In this forum the Greek users are here mostly for fun.

Nationalists? If you only knew how the forum was going to be if here were a couple of nationalists.

Democracy is also when you don't have 10 accounts or you are not in a group of fanatics in order to delete anything that you disagree. It's not the Greeks who do that in this section.

If we believed you that you are an American we could ask many questions about your country to make you feel uncomfortable. But we don't, because as a friend said, you are here to amuse us, you are our makedonkey.

    Keep living in jealusy.

  4. Well,here we go again

Ralph, obviously when you read questions and answers here in Yahoo Greece you skip some parts in purpose.

Many people, and from the nationalists you have said, are noticing the bad of Greece.

make a research in previous questions and you will see.

questions like :whats the pros and cons, etc

On the other hand, with what kind of logic, you call someone nationalist just because when someone ask information about Greece,he/she just give it....

Do you think that the way you act is better?I mean ,WHATEVER anyone asks about Greece, even just for info, you will answer in order to convince him that Greece is bad

We all know Greece is not a paradise,we all know that Greece is not organised, that goverment sucks, that Athens should be more clear, that taxi drivers are rude,bla-bla-bla,so what?

If a traveller asks for the negative, then tell it,or else,i don't know what you are doing, really.

I have found your behavior very strange.i wouldn't call it insulting but complexed.this is nothing but complex.

Surfing around Greek section,to find a good answer to spoil your poison.

Is against democracy to speak good about your country?LOL!

    ADDED:thanks airpole

  5. You already got a few answers that I agree with, and in fact the point is why do you keep sticking around if you find so many faults with a country and its people? I know I wouldn't!

You say you wish negative things were made public too, and that just makes no sense. It's the same as with your mother - you are aware of her faults, but of course you'll take anyone else's eyes out if they dare comment on them. Surely you don't expect people to stand and do anything when somebody is running their country down. That's not nationalism, it's patriotism. Although there's nothing wrong with nationalism either.

It's not the Greeks who create the commotion and who post provocative questions. It's the foreign people and they thrive when they hit the target and so many Greek users take the bait every time and get involved in worthless arguments.

Greece is beautiful enough, wonderful enough not to need to boast about its abundant natural beauty and rich history, and a few 'negative' things that you try to highlight are so insignificant that I wouldn't waste my time on them if I were you. Focus on the good side and think good thoughts - maybe good things will start happening to you too and you'll be happier. And happy people usually cope well with obstacles of any kind. You'll have no need to provoke then.

  6. We like ARGUING, in case you haven't noticed. When you delete us, you deprive us of the right of rebuttal.

Greece wasn't good for me, because I am disabled. So I left. I didn't stick around and moan.

  7. I think that if you want us to discuss this you could post your question at the relevant Y! A  section.  And this is my only problem with your comments etc.  If you are so concerned about tourists why don't you post comments on the other sections as well ? Or is Greece the only country with the problems you've mentioned?

  8. What do you mean? Were you prevented from saying what you want?

  9. Yes you are right. Greece is an awfull country... While FYROM on the other hand is a Paradise!!! Show them the true light and save them!!!
