  1. There is no proven link between humans and chimpanzees. Ask you teacher to show proof of the link. Not just a theory. If he/she cannot then he/she is teaching you a lie and in the USA at least that is against the law.

  2. Humans did not originate from chimpanzees. They both originated (or they are said to originate according to evolution theory) from the same animal, which was neither human nor chimp. That creature evolved from something which walked on four legs, which would have been the common shared ancestor of primates (monkeys, baboons, humans, apes etc) on the one side, and carnivora (cats, wolves, dogs and bears) on the other side.

Chimpanzees are our "closest relatives". Just like normal relatives, closeness means how far back your common ancestor is. If your brother/sister is your closest relative, then your common ancestors are your parents, one generation back. With your cousins, you share one set of grandparents, two generations back. With a second cousins twice removed your closest common ancestor is 5 generations and so it goes on. By the same token you and your brother (usually) look more alike, than you and your cousin.

Chimps are said to share a common ancestor with us, 5 million years back. We share a common ancestor with Guarillas a little further back, and with most monkeys a little further back. We share a common ancestor with cats a little further back, and with bunnies yet a little further back. Then come birds, if we go further back, then fishes, then insects, then trees.

The human/chimp most recent common ancestor, would have given rise to humans, chimps, and other species that died out (Neantherthals, for example). It would have been equally related to ourselves and chimps, but probably looked more like a modern chimp. The only reason I say that is because humans underwent a number of "breakaway" changes, such as much larger brains, the ability to walk completely upright, and sparseness of body hair.

Hope this helps with understanding the theory. Allways be open minded with regards to theories, and try to find out why a theory was suggested in the first place. Some theories are rejected when more evidence comes to light, and some are confirmed, and some are adapted.

  3. Humans did not originate from chimpanzees.  Chimpanzees are modern animals.  Think of it this way:  You did not originate from your second cousin.

Chimpanzees evolved from earlier ape ancestors.

  4. Humans and chimps had a common ancestor, we didn't come from chimps.

There are 12 or 14 or so different types of early man. Cromagnon, Neanderthal, Java Man, Homo Erectus....

    There isn't one missing link.
