  1. Yes his effect would work considering that the scarbs would be destroyed by battle and sent to the grave.

If your attacking a facedown Swarm of Scarabs a lot of people would assume its destruction effect would activate, this is wrong however. Its effect states "When this card is Flip Summoned, destroy 1 monster your opponent controls. " When you attack this facedown card, it is flipped face-up. A flip summon of the swarm can only occur on its owner's turn. Therefore its effect does not activate.

Finally if a card like Macro Cosmos is face-up on the field and Hydrogeddon attacks and destroys the scarabs, Hydrogeddon's effect will not activate because the swarm will be removed from play instead of sent to the graveyard.

"When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the ------> Graveyard <-------, you can Special Summon 1 "Hydrogeddon" from your Deck."

    Hope this answers your question.

  2. Yes, it would work because Swarm of Scarabs' effect only works when your opponent filp summons it. When it gets flipped during battle, it's effect doesn't destroy your monster, and since Hydrogeddon's attack is higher than Scarab's defense, Scarabs is destroyed and you get to bring out another Hydrogeddon.
