If I'm a licensed insurance agent in Michigan how do I set up insurance companies as an independant agent?

  1. You find a company willing to appoint you.  With no experience, it's going to be almost impossible - you'll have to build a network of contacts, and a book of business - working for another independent agent for a few years.  

    If you have experience, call all your marketing reps, and see who's looking to take on agents in your area, make sure you have the numbers on your current book of business - size and loss ratios, and retention rates.


  2. Use google to find carriers doing business on your state. then visit their websites if you see a brokers link then you can contact them about getting appointed. If they don't have a brokers link the probably don't use brokers.

    It also depends on the type of insurance you are talking about, Life, health, P&C or?
