Question:

If I'm in another state and am notified of an emergency in my home, can I call 911?

Say, for instance, I have an internet camera with motion detection set up and it notifies me of motion. I then check and see someone in my home and need the police right away. Do I have to call a state police non-emergency number back home, or can I call 911 and explain that I need emergency services in another area?

  1. Wow.  JB is 100% wrong.  Any 911 center in the country can connect you to any other agency in the country.  Location is irrelevant.  Would it be easier if you had the 7 digit number to your local PD in your cell phone, yea, probably.  But a 911 center will be able to get you the number and/or transfer you.

  2. You can call 911 where you are.

You will need to explain what its happening and they will relay that info to your "home" police.  Keep in mind, there will be a fairly significant gap in response time with all of the relaying.

Or, you could keep the number to your local emergency responders in your cell phone. That what I do.  To get it, call your local police department and ask if they have a local emergency line, other than 911.  Where I am, we encourage cell users to use it because 911 from a cell phone here gets routed to CHP about 200 miles away.

  3. 911 is for local emergencies.  It is designed to get you immediate help, even if you do not know your location.  They can redirect your call to another agency nearby, but not into another state.  Unless that state is a bordering state, and your call is near that border.  In order to report a crime in another state, you must call that agency.

  4. 911 is a nationwide number just say the emergence and you will be connected with the police agency in your state.

  5. Call 911, and tell them to connect you with the 911 in your specific area.

  6. better to cal the police in your area and handle it

  7. What I would suggest if having you local police departments number in your cell phone. Every police department has a dispatch number for emergencys (e.x. 1800-800-0000) in addition to the tradional 911. If a situation did come by and you saw that this was happening it would be an emergency. The definition of an emergency is the immediate danger of a person or propery.

    P.S. Sorry for the spelling

  8. Yeah you can "or can I call 911 and explain that I need emergency services in another area?" You can explain anything to them and patch through to your home state and then explain it to them. They will take care of it.

    Thanks
