If I'm looking for huge bass, why do I need a home subwoofer?

If I'm looking for a subwoofer to rattle my bedroom window, why should I spend $2,000 on a 1500 watt home subwoofer when a car subwoofer costs $400 that produces the same wattage and shakes everything?

  1. Some of the best setups use simply rubber worms, or a nice popper, maybe a mid-dive swimmer.  It depends on the lake you are fishing in, and just how big of bass you really want.

  2. Car Bass sounds bigger because  you are in a small space.  To compare, take your new home subwoofer (when you buy one) and run a long cable and take it into a closet or small bathroom and feel the effect.  Living rooms are very big and it takes a lot of bass to rock such a room.

Now, there are tons of great Subs out there.  I personally like the SVS series of subwoofers.  They are well priced and they can go LOW and LOUD.

I use their CS-2039 and 25-31 in my house with a nice Subwoofer amp.  It rocks.

  3. Benny is right. You won't need a subwoofer that expensive unless you want to feel it when you go to your neighbor's house.

  4. The subs for a car are a lot smaller because they have a smaller space to fill.  Also - cars are more about teenage-impressive BOOM instead of smooth, musical bass so the drivers are not as well made.

Car subs also do not have amps or power supplies built in so the price appears less. Car subs may not have enclosures and rely on the doors/panels of the cars while home subs always have to have an enclosure.

Hooking a car amp to your battery and shocking yourself on a cheap amp - no problem. The amp for a AC power supply in your home has a lot of other safety issues and needs to be designed differently and perhaps tested/certified by an outside agency like UL. This all adds to the price.

  5. You don't need to spend $2000 on a great HT Sub.  Brands like SVS, Hsu, Paradigm, and Velodine have GREAT subs that'll shake your bedroom for $500 - $600.

All self powered, plug in and play, with adjustable crossovers.  They look great and have better musical qualities and are made to fill a room with useable low frequencies.

The same cannot be said about a auto sub system, in a bedroom.

  6. you don't you just need a good rod and some bait. I get huge bass everytime lol.

  7. the thing is that not all car subs are maximised for sound  the home system allready has bass mid range and treble balanced out. the stereo system i got in my bedroom is car audio. my sub unfortunately is solobaric so it doesnt cover the full range of sound. it puts out killer bass, and i needed to get some good woofers in order to balance the bass outthen the custom box needed to maximize the output of the speaker is a bit extra as well.  btw my sub is a kicker L7

  8. All I see is the debate that car systems are better. With no data and in a small space rattling cheap plastic and sheet metal.

The right home sub will be just fine. Also that may be loud, but does it reproduce the audio spectrum properly?
