If I'm really allergic to rabbits, will I be able to live with a guinea pig?

Rabbits make my eyes red and swollen and my nose run. What about guinea pigs? Do they have the same kind of fur?

  1. The fur is a little softer. Rabbits have corse hair. Guinea pigs hair is better. So, yeah, maybe you'll live :)

  2. Maybe. Maybe not.

    Have you read http://www.cavyspirit.com/allergies.htm ?

Your best bet would be to go to a shelter or rescue and handle guinea pigs and the hay they eat. Most are allergic to the hay rather than the guinea pigs, and some types of bedding.

  3. You may not be allergic to guinea pigs. We had a rabbit judge at our fair a couple of years ago that was allergic to the guinea pigs, but not to the rabbits. If you are allergic to guinea pigs though, but are still interested in them, there are two different breeds of guinea pigs, the skinny pig and Baldwins that are hairless guinea pigs.
