If you have to ask this question, you don't know enough to swim out far by yourself. I'm a competitive open water racer and former lifeguard, so I know what I'm saying.

For now, stay in close and go with a buddy. If you can swim where there are lifeguards, that's even better. If you build up experience in the ocean and learn about currents, you can swim out more. Don't turn your back on it!
