If I'm talking about Holidays and weather in the past, do I use preterite or imperfect?

Also, what is the difference between the two? When do i use on or the other?

  1. Imperfect is when you have been doing something over and over again

    I have been going to the gym

    I used to eat rice.

    Preterite is when something has happened once or, happened very abruptly.

    I went to the store yesterday.

    I played hockey in fifth grade.
