Question:

If I'm unlisted, can someone still find out my home address??

I'm not listed in the phone book and no household bills are under my name. Can someone still find out my home address? Someone who I do not wish to see just emailed me to say that they found my home address and will be "seeing me soon". Besides following me, is there any way this could be true? I'm hoping it's an empty threat used to scare me, but I want to ensure my safety before I assume anything. What do you think? Could I call the police on this matter or would that be pre-emptive? TIA!

  1. The email could just be some spam - do you have any indication that it was mailed specifically to you?  (Does it list "undiclosed recipients in the adressee box?)

I don't think you can call the police unless you wanted to file a specific complaint against anybody.

Unfortunately, there are ways to find you out - your identity and address exist independent of phone listings.  Have you ever used a credit card that was billed to you at your address (not sure if you included this in your household bills thing)?  Check your employer to see if anybody's been making any inquiries about you (don't act suspicious - if somebody at work thinks they've done wrong they'll never admit it; you want them to be open and honest so that they can tell you what they know).  Also, social organizations and religious communities use very poor judgement when building up contact info for congregants - you give your church your unlisted number and they think they can put it in their own directory which is then published with local area businesses.

Just because you don't pay bills under your name doesn't get you off the hook - somewhere there must be some observable connection between where you live and your name.  Even if you're staying with someone, that someone can be linked to you.

Try running your name on Pipl - it's a "deep web" search engine.  If your name and address come up, unfortunately the secret is out.

  2. landline phone and caller id

  3. Call the Police, as it is very possible to get an address regardless of phone listing. Pre-emptive is ok... post-mortem, well, it sucks.

Example of how easy...  Female, 24, Milwaukee, WI

Call them, and stop posting personal info on websites, for your own safety.

  4. you could be found through public property tax documents on your counties website. names and addresses are there.

  5. I don't want to scare you or anything but there's this government site (each city has one) that has all addresses, pictures of your house, and the name of owner of the house on file FOR THE PUBLIC to see. >_< The city auditors do this and I was horrified when I found out.

My classmate told me about it and he went online to try it out. He put in my father's first and last name and WHAMO! The picture of our house shows up and the information about the house and ADDRESS was on there. All of this is available to the public! x(
