Question:

If I've had trouble with my FAFSA this year, will I likely have trouble with it in the future?

Will I have trouble next year and the years after because I had trouble with my FAFSA this year? I know it starts over each year and a new form must be filled out, but I had a lot (and I stress A LOT) of trouble with mine this year and I hope I don't have to endure such a hassle next year.

Any advice/info?

  1. I suggest going to a college counselor and let them help you online with the FAFSA. a lot of colleges have FAFSA workshops.

If it was an error in you copying down numbers into the computer then just make sure you allow yourself enough time to complete it.

If it was an error in your taxes, i'd take them to a different tax preparer.

  2. 1. Do the worksheet on paper first before you even get online to do it.  While filing it out, if you have questions on the form about specific line items call the 800 number and ask about it.  Then move on... it if you don't understand that line call back... and again and again.  (you will get a different person every time so don't worry about sounding stupid!!)

    2. Try to avoid esimates and filing before taxes are done unless absolutely unavoidable.  It's better to get everything in correctly the first time, going back and having to make tons of corrections usually just messes things up and delays the process.  Listing you earned 20,000 is incorrect.  The fafsa wants to know you earned exactly $21,234 last year and your income tax paid was $2,145.  Also be aware "Income tax paid" is not what you paid to the irs at tax time and not the amount withheld on your W2 form.

    3. When filling out verifcation worksheet for the fin aid office, take a copy of what you submitted already... They are usually just asking for info you already gave them and are checking to see if it matches.

    4.  Apply early.  Feb/March is early.
