Red 40 is basically the only artificial red food dye used in the U.S. anymore, since Red #3 was phased out in the 1990's after being linked with cancer in laboratory animals.

Red 40, along with the other artificial food dyes currently in use, are petrochemicals.  Since they're all chemically related, you'll probably want to avoid their use altogether!  Read more here: http://www.beyond-food-allergies.com/foo...
