If I am convicted of a crime (wounding- grievious bodily harm) while on my summer holiday, when I am not in the US, does that mean my F1 visa (that allows me to study in the US) will be cancelled? Does it make a difference if I am given probation, or a 6 month prison sentence?

  1. If the country you are from has treaties with the United States, most likely they will know even if you didn't mention it to them. You should seek professional advice on this one. It's a bit tough to answer.

  2. Unless the US somehow hears of your "crime," they wont know what you did and therefore probably would not cancel your visa.  However, when it comes time for you to renew your visa, you will run into some problems since ALL visa applications to enter the US ask if you have ever been convicted of a crime, and if you tick yes, they are probably going to deny you.
