Question:

If I am half-Polish does that make me some sort of minority when applying for college?

My father immigrated from Poland 25 years ago, and my mother is Hispanic. I'm finishing my sophomore year in high school and started thinking about it because there are so many white people at my school with a Mexican parent who get so much scholarship money from the colleges they apply to. So would being half-Polish and half-Hispanic help me out?

  1. I think Polish people are white arent they?  So I don't think that would make you a minority.

But if you are Hispanic (even half Hispanic) then yes, you are a minority.

  2. there are scholarships available specifically for polish-americans. they are usually awarded by polish organizations. try your local polish falcons or the polish-american society.

  3. Your Polish ancestry wouldn't matter.  The way it works is not only do you have to be a minority, but you have to be part of a minority group that is struggling to succeed.  Basically, this means Hispanics and African-Americans get a lot of help and support while other minority groups, like Jews and Asians, get none.

It's not the color of your skin so much as it is your heritage.  Because of your mom, you would qualify as a minority.
