Question:

If I am showing symptoms of pregnancy, wouldn't my pregnancy hormone levels show up on a test?

Hello again.

As I said in another question...

I am late on my period and there is a decent chance that I could be pregnant. I have taken two at home pregnancy tests that have shown up negative.

Someone suggested to me earlier that it could be stress causing my lack of period...so I'm wondering if that's what my deal is.

I have been feeling nauseous on a regular basis now, and like i said, at least a week late on my period...but I'm wondering...

If i were feeling nauseous, wouldn't that mean that there was enough pregnancy hormone floating around in there to make me feel that way? and, if that's the case, wouldn't that mean that I should be testing positive on an at home test?

  1. go to the doctor, but yes stress can affect your period and even you thinking you are pregnant can cause pregnancy symptoms, go to the doctor and get a blood test!! good luck

  2. Usually.  However, if you have been using birth control pills (or patches or shots) the early tests may be muddled.  Hormonal birth control works by imitating the earliest signs of pregnancy, duping the body into not ovulating normally.  If you have used hormonal birth control recently-  within the few months- your body will bounce around a bit as it adjusts to the lack of hormones.

Most women do not feel nausea within a week of a missed period.  You should look for other reasons for your nausea, stress, boredom, mild intestinal disorder, diet and so on.  But, of course, stay alert for a pregnancy and prepare for the options.  Especially make sure your diet is appropriate for a pregnancy, wanted or not.

  3. If your home tests are negative you probably are not pregnant.

Go to a doctor if you want to be sure.

  4. Not necessarily....it depends on the test, when you test etc. and if you were really due for your period then. I've known a few women who are almost 3 weeks late before testing positive on a home test. And you can have all kinds of pregnancy symptoms and NOT be pregnant as well.

Since you are that late, call your Dr. They can do a Beta screen for hormon levels. That will tell you once and for all if you are pregnant or not. No hCg in your blood...no baby in your tummy.

    Good luck.
