  1. You would have to buy and carry a gun that doesn't fit in your shirt pocket.

  2. It depends. Some companies nowadays, will provide a sidearm for the Security Officer but it's a major liability for the company.

I.E. Most individuals are trained on either a 9mm, 45, 357/38. Companies mostly use a 9, 38 depending upon their "policy" Some co's make individuals use the specific model they use do to insurance reasons, or because the company is just biased.

Remember 1 must requal with the state 4x's in 2 years i.e. in Calif.

So be prepared to pay for a fire-arm

Most Law enf. agencies use 9 or 45 so thus,

a good investment would be a 9 probably but then the question of a barrel size comes to play

Remember once you pass the background for owning a fire-arm and the fire-arm exam after waiting week for receiving your fire-arm, get a lock for it/place it in a safe and make sure you know how to use it

Fire-arms are costly.. Make sure you purchase 1 with a serial number don't buy it "hot"

    DON'T CARRY CONCEALED

Especially if you are in Cali where it's hard to get a ccw, unless ur on priv. property but then again you don't threaten anyone nor walk off ur property to the sidewalk/street then ur free game.

  3. I had to buy my own guns, but thats because I work at an unarmed post so I carry it concealed as to not alarm anyone. You could carry a derringer if your company does not have a problem with that. I usually carry a Kel-Tec P32 in the warm months and a Springfield 1911 under my coat in the cold months. Even as an unarmed guard you still have the right to bear arms and protect yourself as an individual citizen. Some states laws are more strict than others though...

  4. That depends only on the company that you work for.  Some of the larger companies like Securitas and Wackenhut issue a firearm; most of the smaller companies don't.  If you expect to work a federal or state contract you can also expect to have your firearm issued.

If you qualify under your states laws and your company lets you I suppose you could carry a derringer.  I would recommend you didn't.  I hope you never have to use your firearm on or off duty, but if you ever have to you will wish you had more than two shots.

Being that you are considering working armed I want to make one more suggestion.  I would look into getting an umbrella insurance policy.  These are not that expensive if you are just insuring yourself.  I have been in a few shootings as a private security guard and I wished I had one.

    Good luck and be safe.
