If I bought a Wi Fi range extender, does it have to be within the original signal range?

A friend and I are planning on sharing a signal, he's just outside of my wifi signal's range. If He bought an extender and kept it at his house, since the two ranges would overlap, would that cover his home as well?

  1. A range extender works exactly like a laptop, except instead of using the wireless to access the internet, it sends it back out again, making the signal stronger. It probably won't work, though I guess you could try and return the repeater if it doesn't work.
