  1. The most that could happen is that he sues you and you will have to pay for the remaining months even if you dont live there anymore. Or, he could keep the money you gave him for the deposit. Or, simply, both of you can come to an agreement and end the lease peacefully. Tell him or her a sad story, like everything is so expensive these days that you will need a smaller apartment, and he may have another apartment for you. I dont know what you plan to do, but dont leave the apartment without telling your landlord first.

As everyone is saying it will ruin your credit, your credit score will go down, and it will be on your  credit report for 7 years.  Anytime anyone runs your report, it will show up.  You end up paying higher interest rates on loans, such as a car loan, and credit cards.  We've actually had tenants call us years later and pay us, to have it removed from their credit report.  It might not matter to your now, but where will you be in 6 or 7 years?  It may matter to you then.

  3. I am a landlord and here is what I do when a tenant breaks the lease without working out a deal with me first: I sue them. I sue them for the cost to clean the place, I sue them for the number of months the unit remains vacant, I sue them for  all my legal costs,  and I keep the deposit. If they don't pay the judgment I garnish their wages until I collect all the money.

    Now that the scary part is out of the way, I don't want to ruin anyone's life, I just want to make a living. If a tenant wants to break the lease before it is up and they come to me and tell me this, I work out a deal. If I know in advance I can advertise the place and get it rented as soon as possible. I do expect them to do an extra good job of cleaning the place and I tell them so. If they break the lease I always keep the deposit. That is usually the worst thing that happens

    Edit: The lawyer said I can seize bank accounts? I did't know this. I'm going to start.

  6. You remain liable for all the rent through the end of the lease, the landlord sues you for it, gets a judgment against you, it wrecks your credit, the landlord garnishes your paycheck and seizes your bank accounts.  Oh, and the judgment is good for something like 20 years.

    The wrecked credit prevents you from getting jobs, loans, credit cards and insurance.

    All in all, no bigga.

    Oh course, you could ask to break the lease and negotiate an out that, while it will cost you some money, doesn't blow your future apart.

  7. Credit might be affected and you might be taken to court. Do read your contract document if you still have it (which i hope you kept it!)
