  1. directnic.com is pretty expensive - $15/year for a .com. Try Netfirms instead - http://tinyurl.com/netfirms : $5.95 domain name (includes private domain registration, this is important to keep spammers from harvesting your email and is a $6.99 option at places like GoDaddy).

To get a free website that has no ads, try Microsoft Office Live Small Business - http://tinyurl.com/olsbfree . It has a free online web design tool that allows you to create web pages without coding. Or, you can upload your own website as well. It comes with 500mb. Since you will have a domain, all you need to do is do a redirect (called redelegation) of the domain to office live.

  2. If you *buy* a domain name, you're buying it from ICANN - the agent you're buying it from is just an agent.  You're buying the name and IP address - not web hosting.  Hosting and domain names are separate.

If you accept a subdomain name from a web host, you put up with anything they want - it's their domain name.
