Question:

If I buy a house in the USA does this mean I can work?

I'm looking to buy a property in New Mexico, but although I can afford the house, I would still need to do some sort of work for living costs (food, bills). I don't have a green card. How does it work? I KNOW I'm legally allowed to own the house, but what happens if I work? Would the seize the house and deport me? What if I was self-employed as a language teacher for example?

Any answers gratefully received...

  1. No - home ownership will not magically give you permission to work in America.  Depending on your visa status, you might not even be allowed to stay in America.

  2. House ownership has nothing to do with your legal status in the US. As a rule of thumb, do not ask questions about US immigration issues here as it makes all the local morons come out of the closet and post nonsense here.

  3. no, you still need to follow the other laws

  4. Buy the house, don't stay here illegally, follow the visa laws, mow lawns, take cash, marry an American.  Ta da, you have a way to be here legally.

Wouldn't we love to have all of our immigrants be able to afford a house and *want* to work?  :-)

(Don't take advice from angry nonAmericans.)

  5. You should make yourself legal before you buy a house

I'm not being funny or mean just trying to save you the headache....

  6. I sure hope you cant

  7. You really need to look into getting your green card before you do something so serious as purchasing a house. Plus, I cannot think of a bank that will loan you the money if there is a chance that you will be deported and they will be stuck with the house.

Please contact Customs and Boarder Patrol and look to become a US Citizen first. That is your best option
