Question:

If I buy a second set of wheels, will I need to adjust the derailleur?

I have a 24 spd mountain bike with Shimano Deore rear derailleur. I have been switching out between road tires and off road tires depending on where I am going to ride, but this gets old because I am doing it at least once every 2 weeks, sometime multiple times a week. I want to buy another wheel set so I can just swap the wheels. So can I just buy the wheels and an 8 spd cassette and not have to worry about adjusting the derailleur each time or will it not line up correctly?

  1. I did the same thing...make sure your cassettes are the same, that way you don't have to do any adjustments.  I have rims made by different manufacturers, so when I put the slicks on, i have to tighten my brakes, the mtb tires are on a wider rim, so i have to move them out again.

  2. It will work fine. That's what I do. I use my slick tires to ride around with my kids. then switch out wheels when I MTB.

  3. As long as you have the cassette spacer behind the cassette and the cassette lockring is tightened adequately, the rear derailleur won't need adjusting.
